A
Long Time Ago in a Galaxy Far, Far Away...

Another idea
for a Blockbuster Games production was hatched in the scheming minds
of Steve Jones and myself. Following on with our series of games based
on films and television we decided to have a go at the memorable scene
form the start of the original film.

Luckily enough
I had subscribed to a new part issue magazine done by DeAgostani called
Star Wars Battle Games. This came with pre-painted 28mm plastic figures,
rules and cardboard scenery each issue. Unfortunately, it only ran for
four issues before they decided to drop it but on the good side it had
all the rules we needed plus the cardboard corridors for the boarding
action!

So, armed
with a knife, glue & foam core board I set to work constructing
the corridors. Several weeks later I had a complete layout and Steve
proceeded to paint all the non-game areas black (wish we had known that
you can buy black foam core board earlier....)

Next we needed
more figures, after all the game wouldn't last long with just the five
figures that had come with the four issues of the magazine! These figures
were exactly the same as the ones in the Wizards
of the Coast, Star Wars Miniatures game (with just different text
under the base). So, several visits to eBay later, we had more than
enough cheap, pre-painted figures for the game, although some of the
characters were a bit more expensive....
Adding a
few extra rules of our own to spice up the scenario we were all prepared
and so the game commenced!

The stormtroopers
carefully made their way into the corridors, trading shots with the
rebels. Casualties were caused on both sides with rebel troopers dropping
back under pressure from the Imperials. The droids made their appearance,
as in the film, rushing across a corridor as shots flew by.

The stormtoopers
(now accompanied by Darth Vader) forced their way towards her. Having
just uploaded the Death Star plans into R2-D2, she was captured and
escorted away. The droids made a rush towards the escape pods. Although
C3-PO was captured, R2-D2 managed to find an escape pod and get away,
the Imperial gunners believing there was no-one on board! All
in all, another enjoyable game that came very close to re-creating the
film.
